TEACHING SCOPE and philosophy
the classes I teach at Wesleyan cover a large portion of the French curriculum (from the seventeenth century to the nineteenth century). In the above seminarS (the first seven classes listed), I attempt to bring my interests in intellectual history, the history of sciences, and eighteenth-century philosophy into the classroom. a typical course will have a mixture of lecture and student-centered discussions.
in all the above seminars, students ARE responsible for mastering a large amount of material from several disciplines. students in my classes will also become familiar with differing critical approaches , ranging from empiricist historical studies to broadly thematic postcolonial readings. this relativistic approach is designed to encourage real intellectual autonomy.
Writing is a substantial component of all the above classes. In most of the literature and culture classes that I teach, I have offered extra-curricular writing workshops providing students with the analytical and rhetorical tools needed to evaluate texts in an open and thorough manner.
